Rupert joined EMI Music in 1971 and spent the next 30 years involved with the company’s record business around the world. In 1976, he was appointed Vice President of Artist and Repertoire for Capitol Records in the US, a post he held until 1982 when he was made President of EMI America. In 1985 he enjoyed a brief stint as Managing Director of EMI Australia before returning to London as President of EMI Records UK from 1986 – 1995. Rupert went on to become President of EMI Europe from 1995 – 1999 and Senior Vice President Worldwide1999 – 2002.

During his time at EMI, Rupert was appointed Chairman of the UK Music Trade Association of British Phonographic Industries (BPI), a role he carried out from 1993 – 1995. Following that Rupert also served as Chairman of the European Board for the International Federation of Phonographic Industries (IFPI).

Rupert was awarded a CBE for his services to the British Music Industry in the Queen’s Honour List of 1997. In 2004 he was given the IFPI Medal for services to the international recording industry.

Rupert now works as a consultant and serves on the boards of various companies.
